Tatami

On a weekend trip to Izu, I slipped back in time to a place where modernity was unknown.  Izu is a postcard perfect seaside resort lined with traditional Japanese ryokans.  Each ryokan offers hot spring onsen spas with views of the sea, the spirited forest or pristine Japanese gardens.  From the courtyard pond with golden koi to the perfectly ordered wooden corridors, the essence of Japan could be found throughout the resort.  There was nothing more I could do but to sit back and take in the aroma of the tatami matt and the sense of peaceful nothingness.

Alas, it must have not been my day, as the museums were all about to close and the Tayasumon was under white construction shields for its annual repairs.  I guess this little route will have to be saved for my next trip back.

With spring just around the corner, I couldn’t resist trying on some tropical items from Sister Jane.  Combination prints are a must do trend of this season which I think everyone should try at least once.  It’s a perfect excuse to experiment with colour combinations and clashing patterns and makes dressing up that much more exciting.  Sister Jane has the must buy items for this trend with a tropical old hawaiian theme for its Spring/Summer ’14 collection.  Each item is an ‘it piece’ in itself, but combining a few together makes the outfit oh so dreamy.

The torii (traditional Japanese gates) symbolises the entrance into a sacred space.  Red torii gates welcome everyone at entrances of shrines and if you wonder into an Inari shrine (shrines that worship the god of Inari who can take up the form of a fox), there are paths with rows of red torii that transport you to a surreal world.  Each torii is donated by people and businesses as a sign of gratitude for their success.  It’s a beautiful gesture of happiness and love of one’s life. The most famous torii path is at the Fushimi Shrine in Kyoto.  However, for anyone seeking a similar sight in Tokyo, make your way to the Nezu Shrine, ideally around April for the azaleas which decorate the red paths with indescribable splendour.

An afternoon spent in Omotesando is any girl’s dream.  It must be one of the prettiest streets in Tokyo lined with designer boutiques and cafes and an ideal location for stumbling upon new sweet shops.  The typical pursuit of ‘cute’/’kawaii’ is given a touch of sophistication.  Case in point, the pastel clad crepe stands are replaced by chocolatiers serving chocolate fondues and dark chocolate delights.   If you are ever in need of a breather from the frills and Hello Kitty goodies in Harajuku, just make your way to Omotesando for a little breather.

Lost in Translation

Tokyo is a city of juxtapositions.  Amongst neon billboards and talking marketing trucks, shrines and temples greet me with eternal serenity. Growing up in Tokyo, I’ve never questioned this idea of finding total simplicity in the middle of chaotic modernisation, but since I moved to London, I’ve gradually started to feel more like a foreigner in my home city.  Although not in the literal sense, things seems to get ‘lost in translation’ in Tokyo.

Utterly brilliant without even trying, the Shibuya crossing is a kinetic collision of lights, noise, ambience and people. As I stood waiting for the lights to change, I was suddenly hit by an eager need to make meaningful connections and a strong desire to see my loved ones.  In a very roundabout way, the yin and yang of Tokyo makes me realise the truly important things in life.

As I stepped out of the Mini onto the grounds of the Imperial Palace, I knew I was back in my beloved home city.  The black pine trees that line the outer gardens of the palace grounds took my breath away and brought me back to a peaceful zen state.  The Japanese black pine or ‘kuromatsu’ is a classic bonsai subject which requires great patience and a traditional horticultural icon.  The 2,000 plus kuromatsu planted along the lawn blend seemingly with the surrounding architecture remnant of the Edo period and the skyscrapers of the modern times.  Simply stunning.

With spring (hopefully) just around the corner, Sister Jane’s Navarino shirt dress was the perfect piece for a whimsical stroll around the Imperial Palace.  The pale pastel and floaty cut of the dress made me think of the approaching cherry blossom season and I teamed the ‘wishing for spring’ look with the fusia pink Sunita Mukhi clutch.  The eye design gives any look the desired coolness and is surprisingly generous in size to hold all the handbag essentials.

When it comes to finding that must have piece, my subconscious formula seems to be beautiful tailoring with a touch of femininity.  This must be why I find androgyny incredibly sexy.  Nothing and no one can beat a girl who can pull off menswear – totally confident and in control of her life.  I’ve been searching for a while for the perfect jumpsuit to fit my subconscious checklist.  The right jumpsuit is the ideal alternative to a cocktail dress.  With just a splash of colour, be it accessories or that matt red lipstick, the entire look is complete and so effortlessly chic.  So you can imagine my absolute excitement when I found this at Reiss.  I actually had an eureka moment when I saw it hanging  on the rack (complete with bright halo lights and a full orchestra).  Tuxedo lapel, check.  Double breasted buttons, check.  Wide legged trousers, check.  Arm slit, check.  I knew my search for that perfect jumpsuit was finally over.
